Always check with your school teacher at the start of the year to clarify what assessments (if any) your particular course will include. Most schools/teachers should be able to provide you with a course outline which will indicate an approximate date for each internal. Use this 'schedule' to plan ahead. Not all schools teach the same internals. On the left hand side is a guide to the various courses being offered by TNT in 2023.
Further Assessment Opportunities (FAO’s) - Explained
Further assessment opportunities (FAO’s) are not mandatory, they are offered at the discretion of the TiC. There are two types of further assessment opportunities:
Resubmission involves you improving your already submitted work if you are close to achieving an ACHIEVED grade
-
A resubmission is at the teacher's discretion and should be completed within a specified time.
-
You must find the errors or omissions without guidance from the teacher
-
Any resubmission must be able to be authenticated
-
A resubmission can apply to either the first attempt or an FAO
-
From 2021 onward, in accordance with NZQA guidelines, resubmissions will only be given to students resubmitting from Not Achieved to a maximum of Achieved. There will be no resubmissions given for Merit or Excellence.
Further Assessment Opportunity (FAO) involves you completing a new assessment or the same task with a different context. This is solely at the discretion of your teacher and is NOT common practice.
1. Only one FAO is permissible per Achievement Standard per year. If offered it should be offered to all the students in the subject.
2. You get the highest of the two grades.

AUTHENTICITY OF YOUR WORK
You must be able to prove that your work is authentic. You can do this by some of the following methods:

-
understanding that plagiarism (using other’s work without acknowledgement) is a breach of the rules
-
acknowledge the resources you use (bibliographies)
-
include the names of people you ask for help from with the assessment and briefly describe how they helped you
-
sign a declaration of authenticity when you hand in your work
-
answer oral questions about your work or give a presentation to the class/teacher

MISSED/ LATE ASSESSMENTS AND EXTENSIONS - This often varies from school to school
It is your responsibility to ensure your work is backed up using an external hard drive or online storage e.g. Google Drive etc.
Provided you have asked for an extension (see below), the following options may be considered when an assessment is missed:
Is there any other documented evidence towards the assessment?
Award no grade/no mark, or if the student had an adequate assessment opportunity, award Not Achieved/award for willful absence.
Truancy or unexplained absences will mean you do not get further assessment opportunities (FAO’s).
Please note: you are not entitled to miss school to complete assessments. You may be failed in this situation. This is considered to be an unfair advantage over other students.
DERIVED GRADE PROCESS
If you were unable to sit external exams or your performance was impaired, you can apply for a Derived Grade. Refer to
The process:
1. Promptly contact your school's NCEA Liaison in the first instance.
2. Impairments must be serious. This excludes stress due to examinations, family disturbances, and minor illness.
3. Medical certificates supporting the claim may be required if the impaired performance is for a medical reason.
4. You must be affected during the examination period or have occurred within the month preceding exams.
5. You should always sit the external exam if possible
Your practice exams are often the evidence needed for a Derived Grade. They are your insurance policy so make sure that you give them your best effort.

BREACHES OF THE RULES
These are some (but not all) examples:
Plagiarism (using other’s work without acknowledgment)
-
False declarations of authenticity
-
Using unapproved notes in a test or exam
-
Collusion (e.g.: communicating with others, disruption or dishonestly assisting or hindering others during a test or exam, allowing one’s work to be copied or submitted by another)
-
Dishonesty (e.g.: lying about reasons for submitting late work)
-
Copying from another student, or deliberately allowing work to be copied by others

If a breach of the rules is suspected then your teacher will keep the evidence of the breach and discuss the situation with the relevant staff. A decision will then be made regarding the most appropriate action.
Cheat Sheet Guidelines
Always check with your teacher, but as a general rule at TNT cheat sheets may be used in each internal for Year's 11, 12 & 13. Project based assessments (Specifically Year 13) will be open book. In the event you opt to use a cheat sheet in an assessment you must adhere to the following conditions.

-
Hand written
-
On a single sided A4 unruled piece of paper
-
Must be written using YOUR own words.
-
Must be handed into your teacher prior to the assessment.
-
Must be individual to you and not a written duplicate of someone else's.

If you are in breach of any of the above conditions your cheat sheet will be confiscated leaving you without a cheat sheet to use. A breach of the above rules may also result in a NA.
Please don't copy word for word my notes or those from a workbook: That is clearly NOT in your own words and is cheating.
Special Assessment Conditions

Students who are entitled to special assessment conditions should speak with their teacher no less than 7 days out from the scheduled assessment to discuss arrangements.

Please remind your teacher in advance. If no prior notification is given it may be assumed that you have declined the opportunity of receiving special assessment conditions in that instance.
